Day One - U19 European Championships October 15
So day one of the U19 European Championships are finished for Team GB , and Day one was a good outing for the team.
They started the day against the Austrian team who were hitting the GB team well on the break, with the British controlling the game with a good maturity for a young team. The British team came back from 3 goals down to make it 4-3, only for the Austrians to equalise in the dying moments.
Next for the British squad were the dominant German team, who were and have been in excellent form all day, and are looking to take back the crown from the Swiss. The 1st period finished with 11 goals for the Germans, albeit in the 2nd period the British team came up trumps and only conceded 3 goals. The British goalie Lucy Gruber had her work cut out and the final result was not a true reflection of how team operated.
Third for Team GB were the hosts Croatia, who took the lead very early, that being said the British team showed more of that maturity and controlled the game and ultimately won game 5-3.
The last showing was from the Swiss and reigning champions, and the British took the game to the Swiss team running 2-2 going into the second. Once again this game did not reflect the final result, finishing 8-4. The team were in fine form again working to a tight plan executing every work coach Tom Dickinson had to say, it was obvious from the stands that Swiss coaches were not expecting such a hard thought result before the played the Germans.
This GB team had some great moments today, with a hat trick from Brandon Ayliffe, a goal being scored from our own half by lobbing the Croatian goalie whilst he was going to the bench to give the team an extra man. As well as great showings from both goalies making a great impact from the back. As well as seeing Solomon Smith skate the length of the rink, with two men on him to score off a backhand.
It’s a exiting time for Team GB and their new coach who is developing a young and talented team who I am sure will have some great times ahead. Should be a good day two. Come on GB!
